Beacon Hill Women Strike Gold
It’s been a tough start to their Premier Division season for Beacon Hill’s Women and like all the other adult teams they have struggled to adjust to the post-covid world of increasing unavailability of players but with then squad down to the bare bones the team played brilliantly to win at the Hill against Bowers & Pitsea. A goal fest was the order of the day as neither team could fully consolidate a lead as they exchanged strikes to put it at 4-4 with ten minutes remaining. Hill were now in control and looking the more likely when some fine midfield interplay released skipper Jo Smeaton to beat her marker and chip the keeper for the winner: 5-4 to the Hill and three points on the board.
Earlier in the day the 10s had set the tone with an excellent 3-1 win over Bocas Juniors with both sets of players, parents and coaches then enjoying an early lunch in the Clubroom. Also on Sunday Rovers’ 9s played some great football despite losing 1-4 to Valley Green and the 8s continued on their goal trail, beating Witham Town 8-3. Amongst the older boys teams the 15s and 11s both lost, the older ones 1-4 to Byron Red Star and the 11s 2-3 in a tight fought game at Hatfield Broad Oak. The 13s’ top Division encounter with Notley was a great game but Hill were left a little despondent with the 3-3 as they had led three times. On Saturday Beacon’s u8s spread out across the county, one squad played a Festival at Blackmore (1 win, 1 draw, 1 loss) whilst another
won 5-2 at Coggeshall Town. On Saturday morning the Club’s newbies, the u6s, carried on their introduction to football with Tim Jarvis and his coaching team at the Hill (pictured).
Saturday saw the ‘A’ Team as the only spark of joy with the Firsts and Vets both conceding their fixtures due to lack of players. The current world is resulting in a number of stalwart players not being available on a regular basis; we’re not the only club facing this issue, a number have folded completely. This is a call to arms for any and
everyone. Contact for the Firsts is Steve Bennett (07595 507102) and Vets is Mark Ellender (07498 291664).
The Reserves lost 1-4 at Blackmore leaving the start performers as the A’s playing some excellent football on Stu Harwood’s carpet at the Hill: visitors Hutton u21s eventually being ground down and Hill running out comfortable 5-1 winners.
